How much do you know about gut health? All of us have experienced abdominal discomfort at some point, enough to know that it is unpleasant to say the least! But did you know that our entire digestive tract, from top to tail, is lined with over 100 million sensitive neurochemical receptors like the ones found in your brain? That’s why scientists have named our stomaches the ‘Second Brain’. Not only can poor digestive health cause discomfort like IBS, but it can also effect your mental health, energy level, immune system, and joints!

There are many factors that can influence gut health, but a major culprit with tummy troubles is actually an imbalance in healthy digestive bacterial ecosystem, called microbiota. There are nearly 3 pounds of microbiota in your digestive tract, which is an average of 10 microbiota for every cell in your body.

Fortunately, if you are looking to support healthy gut bacteria, you need look no further than our favorite superfood: hemp! Not only is hemp one of the most useful and environmentally friendly crops on the planet, it’s also extremely beneficial for your belly. Here are some ways that adding hemp can improve your digestive health.

  1. Easy digestionHemp seeds are more digestible than any other high protein food including meat, whole eggs, cheese, human milk, and cows’ milk. This is because 65% of the protein found in hemp seeds is made of a globulin protein named Edestin. Edestin is known to aid in digestion and is also considered to be the backbone of our cells’ DNA. Hemp protein is also free of the trypsin inhibitors which block protein absorption, and free of oligosaccharides found in soy, which cause stomach upset and gas. This makes hemp seeds an excellent source of protein for mothers, fathers, babies, the elderly, body builders, and the health conscious alike.
  2. Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs)Short Chain Fatty Acids are fatty acids with fewer than 6 Carbon atoms, and hemp provides them for our bodies in two ways. First, the healthy microbiota in our GI tract produce them by fermenting the fiber in our colons. Second, hemp contains the Essential Fatty Acids Omega 3 and Omega 6, which our body can break down into their short chain forms. These SCFA’s can control intestinal inflammation, strengthen colon cells, kill cancer cells and reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event.
  3. FibreWhole hemp seeds are a great source of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre forms a gel-like substance in the gut, containing valuable nutrients for our microbiota, and may also reduce spikes in blood sugar and regulate cholesterol levels. Insoluble fiber adds much needed roughage that helps food and waste pass through the gut. Consuming insoluble fibre has also been linked with a reduced risk of diabetes!
  4. ProteinHemp seeds are an excellent source of protein including all nine Essential Amino Acids that our bodies are unable to produce for themselves. These amino acids are the building blocks our bodies need for cell production. Dietary protein is also a major source of nitrogen for colonic microbial growth and is essential for converting carbohydrates into energy. Since hemp protein is so easy to digest, it does not come with the intestinal distress that other high protein foods can bring with them.

There are so many reasons to make hemp a part of your daily diet, even if you don’t regularly encounter digestive distress. Caring for your GI tract through diet can have far reaching health benefits that everyone can enjoy! We have all been there: hair breakage, split ends, itchy scalp, flakes, no body, no shine, no fun! No one has time for bad hair days, and many shampoos can strip your hair and scalp of its natural protective oils. Luckily, Mother Nature has fantastic hair, and her secret is out! Hemp oil, whether taken internally or simply applied with hemp hair products, is so rich in the Essential Fatty Acids and Proteins that our hair follicles need to produce healthy cells. It is also non-greasy, organic and eco-friendly! Here are some of the benefits you can expect to enjoy when using hemp oil:

  1. Strengthens & Prevents BreakageOften, when we are experiencing hair breakage and split ends, it is because our body is lacking a Protein called Keratin. Hemp is packed full of Keratin, and so helps strengthen and restore the cellular structure in your hair. Additionally, because hemp is so moisturizing, it also improves the elasticity in your hair, which will prevent breakage due to brittleness.
  2. Stimulates Growth & Prevents LossOur hair needs an Essential Fatty Acid called Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) in order to grow. The more GLA we provide it with, the faster it will grow. By using hemp oil, which is rich in GLA, your hair can grow quickly and healthfully. It can also help prevent hair loss by moisturizing your hair and scalp, helping to ease dryness, eczema and irritation. Hemp oil can also help repair damaged membranes on your scalp.
  3. Adds Moisture & LusterHemp oil effectively penetrates hair and skin, to deliver the Essential Fatty Acids, Vitamin E and Protein right where we need them, without that greasy feeling. It dramatically softens hair, while also relieving any tightness and itchiness in the scalp. Additionally, the ceremides found in hemp oil serve to protect the moisture and protein levels in your hair, which is especially helpful during the dry winter months.

Hemp oil really is one of the best and most cost effective ways to care for your hair. Don’t just take our word for it, though! Try our organic hemp shampoo & conditioner set made here in Canada, or this recipe from Natural Oils for Hair for a Hemp Oil Hair Mask:

  1. Pour 5 tablespoons of hemp seed oil, 3 tablespoons of honey, 5 tablespoons of avocado oil, a banana and 5 – 10 drops of rosemary or eucalyptus essential oil into a blender.
  2. Blend together thoroughly. If you live in a dry/humid environment, leave out the honey or you can replace with 3 tablespoons of your favourite deep conditioner.
  3. Apply the mask to hair, cover with a cap and wait for about ½ an hour, then rinse out and style.Amounts can be increased or decreased depending on the length of your hair. In order to reap the full benefits, stick to the routine for 3 – 6 months. For optimum results, add hemp to your daily diet with hemp oil capsules or with one of our delicious recipes.

Living with a chronic pain conditioncan color every aspect of your day. Whether you simply struggle with sore muscles from your active lifestyle, or you combat an auto-immune condition like Lupus or Fibromyalgia, the burden of daily pain can quickly become overwhelming. Often, chronic conditions come with a whole host of not-so-charming complications to complement the pain, such as IBS, chronic fatigue, trouble concentrating and so on. To make things worse, most chronic conditions are completely invisible to the world around us, making the burden even more heavy and alienating.

Most chronic pain survivors have tried every mystery potion and magic jelly bean on the market to find relief, from beer spas to magic jewelry. If you’re in enough pain, desperation will have you grasping at whatever straws late night television is featuring this week. It’s no surprise that many survivors find themselves on the business end of an opioid dependency, just from trying to get by from day to day.

Luckily, modern science is starting to understand the value of hemp for its role in managing chronic pain conditions and their accompanying symptoms. Now, more and more people are turning to hemp as a natural, non-addictive and non-psychoactive alternative to traditional pain relief methods. But how does it work?

  1. Nutrition – Recent studies have emphasized the importance of Protein and Essential Fatty Acids (Omega’s) in our diets, citing them to be as effective at pain relief as ibuprofen. Nearly every system of our body requires these nutrients to function, including our heart, brain, eyes, digestive tract, skin, circulation, immune system, and more. Just a ¼ cup of hemp seeds contains 15g of Protein, 14g of Essential Fatty Acids and 2.5 grams of fiber. That’s what I call a super food!
  2. Terpenes – These aromatic oils found in hemp, cannabis and essential oils were once thought to be nothing but a treat for your sniffer. However, when scientists looked closer they found that much like CBD, these fragrant little molecules can bind to receptors in the brain and can give rise to an incredible host of healthful effects. Most commonly, the effects cited are anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-depressant, anti-seizure, and more. More study is needed on Terpenes but the healing potential here is huge!
  3. CBD – Hemp can be a great source of Cannabidiol (CBD) which is a type of molecule that interacts with our bodies own Endocannabinoid System. Studies have shown that these molecules fit into several different neuron receptors in the brain and body, including opioid receptors and serotonin receptors, which signal feelings of wellbeing and reduce anxiety. Some of the CBD molecules including Cannabichromene (CBC) and Cannabigerol (CBG) have even been correlated to a reduction in inflammation and may even block pain signals from reaching the brain! Unfortunately, CBD is still considered a government controlled substance. Hemp farmers are prohibited from harvesting the CBD rich (and incredibly useful) portions of the hemp plant like the flowers, leaves and roots. While consuming even trace amounts of CBD will still stimulate our bodies Endocannabinoid System, we are really looking forward to when the restriction on CBD is lifted and hemp’s full healing power can be utilized.

From one chronic pain survivor to another, consistently adding a hemp product like hemp seeds or hemp capsules to your daily self-care routine could really show a noticeable difference in your symptoms. Don’t take our word for it, try it for yourself today!

We’re always hearing about the importance of Omega-3 fatty acids in our diet, and rightly so! Omega-3s are nutrients that are vital to our:

  • Metabolism
  • immune system
  • brain health
  • eye health
  • heart health
  • joint health
  • lung health

just to name the top few things!

As mammals, we are unable to produce this important compound ourselves, and must obtain it all through our diet. However, today’s common diet of fast/processed foods and reliance on vegetable oils – all low in critical nutrients like Omega-3  – means most of us could use some extra help getting the nutrition we need.

According to the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health, our bodies are required to maintain a Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio of anywhere between 1:1 and 4:1, but the average North American diet gives us 14-25 times more Omega-6 than Omega-3, which can lead to a laundry list of health problems (heart disease, inflammation, metabolic disfunction, etc.).

Doctors and health professionals have traditionally recommended fish oil supplement capsules to help us get enough of this essential fatty acid – but is this really what’s best for our bodies?

Hemp vs Fish: The Ultimate Smackdown

As Cyndal, CEO of HempE, sat pregnant in the medical clinic 2 years ago her doctor cautioned her, “Be careful how much fish you eat; we are concerned about the mercury levels in the ocean. Don’t eat fish more than twice per week.” She was alarmed to find that the research agrees; our oceans and fresh water have been saturated with toxins like mercury, PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyl) and dioxins that get stored in the liver and fat cells of marine life. Labdoor, an independent supplement research company, did a study on 54 of the bestselling fish oil supplement capsules on the market, and the results are more than a little fishy. Every product contained measurable amounts of mercury, with 3 products recording 50% or greater of the allowable mercury content/serving. Additionally, every supplement contained measurable amounts of mercury, with the category averaging 2.4 PPB (part per billion) of mercury. For the non-biochemists out there, that’s too much mercury.

When the fish are caught, they are brought to a factory to be sectioned, steamed and pressed to produce the fish oil. This steaming process can pose serious health risks, as all omega oils have a very low heat tolerance. You know that smell of day old fish in the trashcan? That is the smell of the fish and all its polyunsaturated goodness oxidizing (aka going rancid). In that same study by Labdoor mentioned above, it was found that all products recorded measurable levels of oxidization, with 14 out of the 54 supplements tested measuring at or above the upper limit of 10 meq/kg. This is a disturbing fact- think of all those nasty ‘fish burps’ those supplements can cause. Gross!

In our books, the idea of consuming rancid fish product for health purposes just doesn’t pass the taste (or smell) test.

Perhaps the most serious effects produced by fish oil supplements are those of an environmental nature. Fish do not produce the Omega fatty acids themselves, but like us, obtain it from their diet, which consists of algae and other plants. By the time the fish is caught it has already digested much of the fatty acid leaving us with an incomplete Omega-3 profile (more on that here). We could easily just harvest the algae, but still we insist on having fleets of colossal fishing tankers (that also, by the way, destroy other marine life by dragging nets across the ocean floor). These methods devastate entire ecosystems, and are so indiscriminate that many of the fish caught are unwanted. Sadly, they are just discarded back into the ocean, dead. Let’s do better for our planet!

So, what’s a mammal to do for their omega-3s? Have no fear, hemp is here!

Hemp is a superfood that offers the richest and most balanced natural source of EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids) and it naturally provides us with a 3:1 Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio (well within the perfect ratio). Just one tablespoon of hemp oil contains all the omega-3 & omega-6 you need in a day, and exhibits the highest phenolic content and antioxidant activity when compared to other plant based oils. It also has naturally occurring properties that are anticarcinogenic, relieve systemic inflammation, eczema, psoriasis, autoimmune conditions, psychiatric/mental health disorders, promotes eye and brain health, etc. Additionally, because hemp seed oil is plant-based, it can be cold pressed, packaged and stored appropriately so it does not oxidize and spoil as easily. Also, since it hasn’t been partially digested by a fish, it provides the complete nutritional profile of Omega-3.

Long story short: hemp provides your body with a whole host of amazing nutritional benefits you’re likely missing in your diet, and can go a long way toward optimizing your health!

Hemp is also an incredibly sustainable, and earth conscious alternative to the destructive commercial fishing industry. It is easily grown without the use of herbicides or pesticides, and removes a larger amount of carbon dioxide per acre than most plant life. It has thousands of commercial applications including paper, textiles, clothing, 100% biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, animal feed and even concrete! It requires no overfishing or ecosystem destruction, it is 100% recyclable and non-toxic. The possibilities are endless!

When it comes to Omega-3 fatty acids, hemp is the reigning champion. Whether it’s about your health or environmental impact, fish oil supplements just don’t measure up.

So, ditch the fish burps and discover all the benefits of hemp for yourself!
