Feeling run down? Got the January ‘Blahs’? You’ve consumed your daily wage in Redbull and Starbucks but you’re still losing altitude, and pulling yourself out of that nose dive can be a job in itself! It’s a sad fact of life; you cannot pour from an empty cup. Fear not! We’ve put together a short list of ways you can increase your energy naturally!

 

  1. Hemp!

    Hemp is one of the best plant-based Proteins on the planet, consisting of globulins (edestin) and albumin. These are two of the most common types of Proteins found in the human body, which means it is very effecient at providing your body with what it needs to repair and grow lean body tissue.

    Hemp is also an excellent source of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). They call them ‘Essential’ because our body is unable to produce them on it’s own, meaning that we need to get 100% of our daily requirement from diet or supplements.     Finally, hemp is packed to the gills with Iron. Just 30g of hemp seeds will give you 21% of your recommended daily allowance, and it is so easy to include in your diet. Iron is important to help your blood transport oxygen throughout your entire body, having a significant effect on your energy levels.

  2. Stay hydrated

    The very first course of action when feeling fatigued is to drink a great big glass of water (not coffee…sorry). Exhaustion is one of the first signs of dehydration and even small variations in your hydration can affect your metabolism.

    How much should you drink? Current standards suggest that you take your body weight, divide it by 2, and then drink that amount in ounces. If you are active, sick, pregnant or nursing you should drink even more! Luckily, many foods like fruits and vegetables contain water, and contribute towards your daily totals.Adding a squeeze of a fresh lemon or lime will make your water become an even better source of enlivening energy!
  3. EatDon’t be afraid to nourish and fuel your bodies! If you are skipping (or skimping), on breakfast especially, studies show that you are more likely to experience low mood and energy throughout the day.Our bodies are evolved to graze, so eating small meals or snacks throughout the day can actually boost your metabolism and give you more energy. Large meals can burden your digestive system, and once your meal is digested, your blood sugar levels crashes, taking your mood and energy with it!Put life directly into your body with raw, live foods (fruits, vegetables, berries, nuts, and seeds).
  4. Reduce StressEmotions such as stress, worry, and anger, can leave you mentally and physically exhausted even if you’ve spent the day napping. Even worse, long term stress can lead to chronic illness, leaving you to do less and less, while feeling it more and more!The good news is that we have all the power to mitigate the effects of stress in our lives. By making self care a priority in our daily life, we are investing life into ourselves so we can invest ourselves into life. Self care can take many forms: exercise in a form you enjoy, taking a nap, setting boundaries, getting outside, meditation, soothing baths, enjoying a hot cup of tea,  etc! 
  5. KombuchaKombucha is a traditional fermented tea found in many different cultures throughout the centuries. It is packed full of probiotics, vitamins, minerals and enzymes that support your body in various ways. Hemp – has there ever been a plant so misunderstood? Even today, if you mention the word around the wrong people, they’ll tell you to take your tie dye and your Grateful Dead records back to the 60’s where they belong. It’s true, there is some controversy surrounding this crop, but the truth is that hemp has the potential to be hugely beneficial to our planet, our economy, and our health. How did we come to believe such inaccurate things about one of the most useful plants in our arsenal?

The word ‘hemp’ had a very different meaning in the ever expanding landscape of medieval Europe. As their exploration efforts broadened, they labeled any fibrous plants they discovered as ‘hemp’, which is why we have so many different types of hemp today: Manila hemp (abacá, Musatextilis), sisal hemp (Agave sisalana), Mauritius hemp (Furcraeagigantea), New Zealand hemp (Phormium tenax), Sunn hemp (Crotalariajuncea), Indian hemp (jute, Corchorus capsularis),Indian hemp (Apocynum cannabinum), bow-string hemp (Sansevieriacylindrica).

A new layer of confusion was added to the word when the word hemp ‘marihuana’ (today, commonly spelled as ‘marijuana’) was coined and then adopted by the American Bureau of Narcotics in the 1930’s to describe all forms of hemp, regardless of their botanical distinctions. Luckily, in 1998 hemp was been legalized for industrial use in Canada, but the damage done to the public awareness and understanding still remains. So, lets talk about some of the myths surrounding hemp!

 

    1. Myth #1: Smoking hemp will get you high.
      Reality: Industrial hemp contains almost no THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound in Marijuana responsible for the psychoactive effects. In fact, hemp contains high levels of CBD (Cannabidiol), which counteracts the effects of THC in the body. So, you could say industrial hemp is like the anti-drug to Marijuana.
    2. Myth #2: Marijuana crops can be hidden in hemp fields.
      Reality: Industrial hemp and marijuana require very different environments and care in order to flourish. Hemp is grown outdoors, planted close together and grows tall and skinny. Marijuana is short and bushy, and grows best indoors with more space between plants (4-5 feet). Not only would it be extremely easy to spot Marijuana in a Hemp field, but because Hemp contains such high levels of CBD, cross pollination would have a negative effect on the THC levels in the marijuana plants.
    3. Myth #3: Hemp is not an economically viable crop.
      Reality: The market for industrial hemp is growing like a weed (pun intended) and it’s no surprise! Hemp is easy to grown in our cold Canadian climate, it absorbs more CO2 out of the air per acre than trees, and has over 50,000+ known uses. It can be used to make environmentally friendly fuel, textiles, paper, bioplastic, food, medicine, building materials, animal feed, beauty products, etc.

There is a lot of confusion and mythology surrounding hemp, but the benefits of embracing this crop are almost immeasurable.
