Have you heard? We are offering you the opportunity to win a year’s supply of our most sought after product: Hemp Oil Capsules! Free stuff is always great, but what’s so great about hemp oil? We’re glad you asked!

  1. It strengthens and restores your hair, skin and nails.

When you use hemp oil every day, whether you take it internally with capsules, or you use it externally in a beauty product, you will begin to wonder why you ever bothered with those expensive department store concoctions. Hemp seeds are abundant in the Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) and proteins that our bodies need to produce healthy hair, skin and nail cells. Your hair will increase in thickness, shine, strength and elasticity, and hemp will reduce scalp dryness, itchiness and flakes. Your skin’s elasticity, softness and moisture retention should improve, leaving your skin looking energized and renewed. Last but not least, hemp oil nourishes and strengthens your nails and cuticles. The best part is that it can provide all these beauty benefits for a fraction of the price of those celebrity endorsed ‘miracle products.’ Read more about it here.
  2. It can help prevent heart disease and stroke.

Hemp oil is super packed with heart happy nutrition. It contains the perfect balance of the Essential Fatty Acids that have been proven to lower your risk of heart disease, platelet aggregation, and stroke. It is rich in beneficial proteins such as Edestin, which your body uses to produce healthy blood cells and plasma, as well as Arginine, which has been shown to reduce conditions such as high cholesterol, high triglycerides, congestive heart failure and hypertension. Hemp oil even keeps your veins happy, helping blood flow, and preventing varicose veins!
  3. It can relieve symptoms of PMS and Menopause.

Research has shown that the hormonal imbalances responsible for many of the symptoms of PMS and Menopause are associated with deficiencies in Essential Fatty Acids. The EFA profile in hemp seed oil is especially suited for relieving these conditions because it contains a healthy dose of Gamma Linolenic acid (GLA), which your body needs to create anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. These hormone-like compounds help smooth muscles contract, control body temperature, relieve bloating and reduce inflammation. Just one tablespoon of hemp oil provides you with 600 mg of GLA, well within the 500-1000 mg daily intake recommendations for those experiencing PMS and Menopause symptoms.
  4. It can improve your mental health.

By this point, you have likely realized the EFA’s are a really important part of maintaining good health, and mental health is no exception. Research has shown that EFA’s help improve conditions such as attention deficit disorder, chronic stress, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and dementia. Hemp is one of the richest plant based sources of EFA’s (especially GLA), and it can easily be grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides! Read more about the mental health benefits of hemp here.
  5. It can relieve pain and inflammation.

Many of our client’s have reported significant improvement from their arthritis symptoms, and their joint pain. Others have reported significant improvement in the mobility of their pets after integrating hemp seed oil into their daily diet. Hemp’s natural anti-inflammatory properties have also been shown to relieve symptoms of autoimmune conditions such as fibromyalgia and lupus, as well as other chronic pain conditions.
  6. And that’s not all…

When you look at the list above, it’s easy to see why hemp is called a superfood. We could probably chat half your day away with all the different ways hemp can benefit your health, but we know you have places to be. Here is a quick list of some of the other health improvements people have experienced with hemp: improved lung health, eye health, digestive health, metabolic health, immune system, etc. It also provides all these same benefits to your pets, while healing our environment and boosting our economy. Superfood indeed!

Want to enter the draw for a year’s supply of hemp oil capsules? It’s easy! Purchase a bottle of capsules here. Start out with 3 capsules a day for the first week, then double up to 6 capsules per day for the next few weeks. Some people find the health benefits are noticeable with just 3/day, and others say their magic number is as many as 10 capsules/day. We want you to feel the difference as soon as possible, but also don’t want you wasting your money by taking more than you need to. Once you feel the health benefits, decrease by 1/day to experiment and find your own “magic number”. To enter to win, simply send us a short video telling us about the benefits you’ve noticed.

Email your video to [email protected] and we’ll enter you into the draw, which will take place July 2nd. Please note that the videos may be shared to our social media, website, or otherwise. How much do you know about gut health? All of us have experienced abdominal discomfort at some point, enough to know that it is unpleasant to say the least! But did you know that our entire digestive tract, from top to tail, is lined with over 100 million sensitive neurochemical receptors like the ones found in your brain? That’s why scientists have named our stomaches the ‘Second Brain’. Not only can poor digestive health cause discomfort like IBS, but it can also effect your mental health, energy level, immune system, and joints!

There are many factors that can influence gut health, but a major culprit with tummy troubles is actually an imbalance in healthy digestive bacterial ecosystem, called microbiota. There are nearly 3 pounds of microbiota in your digestive tract, which is an average of 10 microbiota for every cell in your body.

Fortunately, if you are looking to support healthy gut bacteria, you need look no further than our favorite superfood: hemp! Not only is hemp one of the most useful and environmentally friendly crops on the planet, it’s also extremely beneficial for your belly. Here are some ways that adding hemp can improve your digestive health.

  1. Easy digestionHemp seeds are more digestible than any other high protein food including meat, whole eggs, cheese, human milk, and cows’ milk. This is because 65% of the protein found in hemp seeds is made of a globulin protein named Edestin. Edestin is known to aid in digestion and is also considered to be the backbone of our cells’ DNA. Hemp protein is also free of the trypsin inhibitors which block protein absorption, and free of oligosaccharides found in soy, which cause stomach upset and gas. This makes hemp seeds an excellent source of protein for mothers, fathers, babies, the elderly, body builders, and the health conscious alike.
  2. Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs)Short Chain Fatty Acids are fatty acids with fewer than 6 Carbon atoms, and hemp provides them for our bodies in two ways. First, the healthy microbiota in our GI tract produce them by fermenting the fiber in our colons. Second, hemp contains the Essential Fatty Acids Omega 3 and Omega 6, which our body can break down into their short chain forms. These SCFA’s can control intestinal inflammation, strengthen colon cells, kill cancer cells and reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event.
  3. FibreWhole hemp seeds are a great source of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre forms a gel-like substance in the gut, containing valuable nutrients for our microbiota, and may also reduce spikes in blood sugar and regulate cholesterol levels. Insoluble fiber adds much needed roughage that helps food and waste pass through the gut. Consuming insoluble fibre has also been linked with a reduced risk of diabetes!
  4. ProteinHemp seeds are an excellent source of protein including all nine Essential Amino Acids that our bodies are unable to produce for themselves. These amino acids are the building blocks our bodies need for cell production. Dietary protein is also a major source of nitrogen for colonic microbial growth and is essential for converting carbohydrates into energy. Since hemp protein is so easy to digest, it does not come with the intestinal distress that other high protein foods can bring with them.

There are so many reasons to make hemp a part of your daily diet, even if you don’t regularly encounter digestive distress. Caring for your GI tract through diet can have far reaching health benefits that everyone can enjoy! Find out for yourself by trying any of our great hemp seed products, and by checking out our recipes page!

Have you ever had one of those ‘gut feelings’ that you just had to listen to? How is it that our stomachs can hold so much wisdom and intuition? Scientists think they may have found the answer! They have found that our entire digestive system, from our esophagus to our posterior, is lined with over 100 million neurons, just like those found in our brains and central nervous systems. There are so many neurons in our digestive tract that scientists have nicknamed the gut the ‘second brain’ (though it is technically known as the Enteric Nervous System). In fact, almost 95% of our bodies Serotonin receptors (which are largely responsible for our feelings of happiness), can be found in our guts. Who knew?!

This new information is changing the way many people approach maintaining good mental health. Habits like getting enough sleep, regular exercise, and meditation are incredibly important for a sound mind, but it is becoming apparent that what we put in our stomachs is just as crucial. Luckily, we know of a certain super food that has a reputation for easing the symptoms of mental illness. Here are 3 reasons why adding hemp to your diet is a great way to support your mental health.

  1. Essential Fatty Acids

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are absolutely crucial to brain health & development. In fact, the brain and the Myelin Sheath are composed of 75% fat. The Myelin Sheath is the protective layer of fat that serves to guard the neurons from toxins, while also absorbing life sustaining nutrients. Research has shown that EFA’s help with attention, depression, schizophrenia, and also neurological disorders like parkinson’s and alzheimer’s.Hemp offers the richest and most balanced natural source of EFA’s, and has the perfect ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 for maintaining optimal mental, hormone and heart health.   Read more about EFA’s here.

  2. Protein

Protein isn’t just for your muscles, it is also essential for brain development and neurotransmitter function. Research has shown that insufficient protein during pregnancy and early childhood is linked to many behavioral disorders, and it can affect how our brain responds to the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is responsible for our feelings of motivation and drive.Hemp seeds are composed of around 25% Protein, and contain significant amounts of all 9 Essential Amino Acids. That is something very few plants can boast!

  3. Vitamin B

B Vitamins in your diet are critical for your body to produce feelings of well being. They regulate the effects of stress in your body, they assist proper neurotransmitter function, and they boost metabolism and energy. They also assist the body in utilizing stored fuel reserves to nourish the brain and body.Hemp seeds are rich in almost all major B vitamins, including B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6.

These are just a few of the great benefits of including hemp in your daily diet. Other benefits that hemp supports are improved heart, lung, eye, gut, and joint health! There are some delicious recipes on our website that you can try, or you can try one of these great producs…

Set yourself up for success with hemp, today!

Feeling run down? Got the January ‘Blahs’? You’ve consumed your daily wage in Redbull and Starbucks but you’re still losing altitude, and pulling yourself out of that nose dive can be a job in itself! It’s a sad fact of life; you cannot pour from an empty cup. Fear not! We’ve put together a short list of ways you can increase your energy naturally!

  1. Hemp!

Hemp is one of the best plant-based Proteins on the planet, consisting of globulins (edestin) and albumin. These are two of the most common types of Proteins found in the human body, which means it is very effecient at providing your body with what it needs to repair and grow lean body tissue.

Hemp is also an excellent source of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). They call them ‘Essential’ because our body is unable to produce them on it’s own, meaning that we need to get 100% of our daily requirement from diet or supplements. EFAs are vital for our metabolism, immune system, brain health…the list goes on. You can read more about them here and here.

Finally, hemp is packed to the gills with Iron. Just 30g of hemp seeds will give you 21% of your recommended daily allowance, and it is so easy to include in your diet. Iron is important to help your blood transport oxygen throughout your entire body, having a significant effect on your energy levels.

  2. Stay hydrated

The very first course of action when feeling fatigued is to drink a great big glass of water (not coffee…sorry). Exhaustion is one of the first signs of dehydration and even small variations in your hydration can affect your metabolism.

How much should you drink? Current standards suggest that you take your body weight, divide it by 2, and then drink that amount in ounces. If you are active, sick, pregnant or nursing you should drink even more! Luckily, many foods like fruits and vegetables contain water, and contribute towards your daily totals.Adding a squeeze of a fresh lemon or lime will make your water become an even better source of enlivening energy!
  3. EatDon’t be afraid to nourish and fuel your bodies! If you are skipping (or skimping), on breakfast especially, studies show that you are more likely to experience low mood and energy throughout the day.Our bodies are evolved to graze, so eating small meals or snacks throughout the day can actually boost your metabolism and give you more energy. Large meals can burden your digestive system, and once your meal is digested, your blood sugar levels crashes, taking your mood and energy with it!Put life directly into your body with raw, live foods (fruits, vegetables, berries, nuts, and seeds).
  4. Reduce StressEmotions such as stress, worry, and anger, can leave you mentally and physically exhausted even if you’ve spent the day napping. Even worse, long term stress can lead to chronic illness, leaving you to do less and less, while feeling it more and more! The good news is that we have all the power to mitigate the effects of stress in our lives. By making self care a priority in our daily life, we are investing life into ourselves so we can invest ourselves into life. Self care can take many forms: exercise in a form you enjoy, taking a nap, setting boundaries, getting outside, meditation, soothing baths, enjoying a hot cup of tea,  etc!
  5. KombuchaKombucha is a traditional fermented tea found in many different cultures throughout the centuries. It is packed full of probiotics, vitamins, minerals and enzymes that support your body in various ways. By adding this drink to your daily regiment you can expect to enjoy many health benefits including improved pancreatic function, better digestion, improved mood, increased nutrient absorption, improved joint health and increased energy!Kombucha used to be difficult to get your hands on, but now-a-days you can find it in nearly every grocery and health food store. But what’s the fun in that? There are a lot of really great recipes that are easy to aquire and follow! Try brewing your own at home!

Hemp – has there ever been a plant so misunderstood? Even today, if you mention the word around the wrong people, they’ll tell you to take your tie dye and your Grateful Dead records back to the 60’s where they belong. It’s true, there is some controversy surrounding this crop, but the truth is that hemp has the potential to be hugely beneficial to our planet, our economy, and our health. How did we come to believe such inaccurate things about one of the most useful plants in our arsenal?

The word ‘hemp’ had a very different meaning in the ever expanding landscape of medieval Europe. As their exploration efforts broadened, they labeled any fibrous plants they discovered as ‘hemp’, which is why we have so many different types of hemp today: Manila hemp (abacá, Musatextilis), sisal hemp (Agave sisalana), Mauritius hemp (Furcraeagigantea), New Zealand hemp (Phormium tenax), Sunn hemp (Crotalariajuncea), Indian hemp (jute, Corchorus capsularis),Indian hemp (Apocynum cannabinum), bow-string hemp (Sansevieriacylindrica).

A new layer of confusion was added to the word when the word hemp ‘marihuana’ (today, commonly spelled as ‘marijuana’) was coined and then adopted by the American Bureau of Narcotics in the 1930’s to describe all forms of hemp, regardless of their botanical distinctions. Luckily, in 1998 hemp was been legalized for industrial use in Canada, but the damage done to the public awareness and understanding still remains. So, lets talk about some of the myths surrounding hemp!

    1. Myth #1: Smoking hemp will get you high.
Reality: Industrial hemp contains almost no THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound in Marijuana responsible for the psychoactive effects. In fact, hemp contains high levels of CBD (Cannabidiol), which counteracts the effects of THC in the body. So, you could say industrial hemp is like the anti-drug to Marijuana.
    2. Myth #2: Marijuana crops can be hidden in hemp fields.
Reality: Industrial hemp and marijuana require very different environments and care in order to flourish. Hemp is grown outdoors, planted close together and grows tall and skinny. Marijuana is short and bushy, and grows best indoors with more space between plants (4-5 feet). Not only would it be extremely easy to spot Marijuana in a Hemp field, but because Hemp contains such high levels of CBD, cross pollination would have a negative effect on the THC levels in the marijuana plants.
    3. Myth #3: Hemp is not an economically viable crop.
Reality: The market for industrial hemp is growing like a weed (pun intended) and it’s no surprise! Hemp is easy to grown in our cold Canadian climate, it absorbs more CO2 out of the air per acre than trees, and has over 50,000+ known uses. It can be used to make environmentally friendly fuel, textiles, paper, bioplastic, food, medicine, building materials, animal feed, beauty products, etc.

There is a lot of confusion and mythology surrounding hemp, but the benefits of embracing this crop are almost immeasurable. We believe that with some education and awareness, the solutions offered by industrial hemp products will be in high demand! Head to our website where you can read more about this super crop, check out some cool products, and even sign yourself up to get involved in the fast growing market of industrial hemp!

Living with a chronic pain conditioncan color every aspect of your day. Whether you simply struggle with sore muscles from your active lifestyle, or you combat an auto-immune condition like Lupus or Fibromyalgia, the burden of daily pain can quickly become overwhelming. Often, chronic conditions come with a whole host of not-so-charming complications to complement the pain, such as IBS, chronic fatigue, trouble concentrating and so on. To make things worse, most chronic conditions are completely invisible to the world around us, making the burden even more heavy and alienating.

Most chronic pain survivors have tried every mystery potion and magic jelly bean on the market to find relief, from beer spas to magic jewelry. If you’re in enough pain, desperation will have you grasping at whatever straws late night television is featuring this week. It’s no surprise that many survivors find themselves on the business end of an opioid dependency, just from trying to get by from day to day.

Luckily, modern science is starting to understand the value of hemp for its role in managing chronic pain conditions and their accompanying symptoms. Now, more and more people are turning to hemp as a natural, non-addictive and non-psychoactive alternative to traditional pain relief methods. But how does it work?

  1. Nutrition – Recent studies have emphasized the importance of Protein and Essential Fatty Acids (Omega’s) in our diets, citing them to be as effective at pain relief as ibuprofen. Nearly every system of our body requires these nutrients to function, including our heart, brain, eyes, digestive tract, skin, circulation, immune system, and more. Just a ¼ cup of hemp seeds contains 15g of Protein, 14g of Essential Fatty Acids and 2.5 grams of fiber. That’s what I call a super food!
  2. Terpenes – These aromatic oils found in hemp, cannabis and essential oils were once thought to be nothing but a treat for your sniffer. However, when scientists looked closer they found that much like CBD, these fragrant little molecules can bind to receptors in the brain and can give rise to an incredible host of healthful effects. Most commonly, the effects cited are anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-depressant, anti-seizure, and more. More study is needed on Terpenes but the healing potential here is huge!
  3. CBD – Hemp can be a great source of Cannabidiol (CBD) which is a type of molecule that interacts with our bodies own Endocannabinoid System. Studies have shown that these molecules fit into several different neuron receptors in the brain and body, including opioid receptors and serotonin receptors, which signal feelings of wellbeing and reduce anxiety. Some of the CBD molecules including Cannabichromene (CBC) and Cannabigerol (CBG) have even been correlated to a reduction in inflammation and may even block pain signals from reaching the brain! Unfortunately, CBD is still considered a government controlled substance. Hemp farmers are prohibited from harvesting the CBD rich (and incredibly useful) portions of the hemp plant like the flowers, leaves and roots. While consuming even trace amounts of CBD will still stimulate our bodies Endocannabinoid System, we are really looking forward to when the restriction on CBD is lifted and hemp’s full healing power can be utilized.

From one chronic pain survivor to another, consistently adding a hemp product like hemp seeds or hemp capsules to your daily self-care routine could really show a noticeable difference in your symptoms. Don’t take our word for it, try it for yourself today!

Humans the world over have used the hemp plant in many forms for thousands of years, and modern processing technologies have given it nearly unlimited applications. To date, over 50,000 applications have been found, and each one of them has the potential to shrink our carbon footprint. Also, since this plant can be easily grown in our unpredictable Alberta climate, it could give our local economy a much-needed boost. There are so many positives to embracing this super plant as part of our everyday lives.

Here’s 10 ways this crop is used today (some of them may surprise you)!

10. Pet Food

Whether it’s your 3 pound rabbit or that 500 pound bear you probably shouldn’t have domesticated, all mammals alike need their Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). Hemp oil is an excellent source for all your EFAs, and it is a natural way to improve your pet’s joint health, lower its risk of cancer, and improve their skin and coat. It can be used alongside any medications, and can reduce your pet’s anxiety levels!

9. Skin Care

Hemp seed oil’s EFA profile is very similar to our own human skin, making it a perfect moisturizer for any skin type (even sensitive skin). It conditions the skin naturally without clogging the pores, and the anti-inflammatory properties can reduce the appearance of redness and aging! It can be used to treat many skin conditions like dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, acne, and dermatitis. Try it in our popular beauty product line, or if you’re feeling crafty, you could try making your own skin care products!

8. Batteries

Traditional batteries use toxic chemicals that are dangerous to humans, wild life and our water sources. Luckily, researchers have demonstrated that hemp bast fibers have the ability to conduct electricity as efficiently as graphene. If you’re electrical engineering knowledge is rusty, think ultra-green and ultra-cheap batteries!

7. Wood Finish

Hemp oil can be used as a solvent-free wood finish. Traditional products are so toxic they require a well-ventilated space, whereas hemp oil is environmentally friendly, and smells like freshly crushed walnuts. It preserves the natural color of the wood, and it is safe for food preparation surfaces. Watch a quick video about it here!

6. Textiles

Hemp has been used to make clothing for millennia, in fact materials made from hemp were found in tombs dating back to 8,000 BC! It is one of the most durable natural fibers on the planet, and products made from it are long lasting, stretch resistant, mold resistant, antibacterial, light and breathable. It can be ethically produced right here in Canada, so we can sleep well knowing we are making positive consumer choices when we choose hemp. Yay, us!

5. Biodegradable Plastic

You can’t shake a stick on the internet without hitting a video of a sad turtle with too much plastic in its diet. Our addiction to plastic disposables is one of the biggest threats to our water and land. If only there were some kind of plant based plastic that is biodegradable, recyclable, durable, carbon neutral and versatile. Oh wait, there is! Hemp plastic and other bio-plastics are rising in popularity in North America. It is lighter, stronger, safer, less expensive and can be molded into any shape imaginable! The possibilities are limitless!

4. Hempcrete

Hempcrete (Hemp + Concrete) is an exciting new building material made from a mixture of hemp hurds and lime. This is concrete that literally acts like a living tree; breathing in Carbon CO2 and breathing out fresh, tasty Oxygen. It is also mold resistant, pest resistant, fire resistant and is an excellent insulator!

3. Bio-Fuel

As if this plant weren’t already amazing, it is also an environmentally friendly source of biofuel. Hemp biodiesel is a cost effective, environmentally safe and renewable fuel source. When used, it can extend the lifespan of the vehicle because it is more lubricating than petroleum diesel fuel. This application has massive potential for our economy and our environment!

2. Motor Vehicles

The world’s most eco-friendly car runs on, and is made of…you guessed it! Hemp! Vehicles made of hemp are 10 times stronger than steel, yet are ultra-light, making them impact resistant AND fuel efficient. Researchers believe that with the rise in environmental concerns, hemp fibers are likely to become a major component of cars around the world.

1. Nuclear Disaster Clean Up

For over a decade, industrial hemp has been planted at the site of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. Why? Hemp crop literally cleans and enriches the soil it is planted in by breaking down pollutants and stabilizing metal contaminants. The crop is then used to make biofuel so that none of this plant goes to waste. Hemp is now being sought to help clean up environmental disasters around the world, including Fukushima!

It’s plain to see that hemp should not be underestimated. The nearly endless applications of this super plant will mean exciting and positive things for our environment, our economy and our future. Discover the benefits of hemp today!
